The tally of victims resulting from the transport jet which caught fire and went down has climbed to 13, as confirmed by recent reports.
Mayor's Statement
While en route to the Teamsters’ memorial service, I was informed of a thirteenth victim that died as a consequence of the aircraft incident,” wrote the local official in a online message. “My prayers are with the loved ones, associates and co-workers of all who were lost in this week’s disaster. We will overcome this together.”
Casualties Named
An announcement from the company identified the flight crew operating the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.
“Our hearts are extended to each employee who has been touched and everyone in our local area – helping you and ensuring you receive the attention and resources you need is our focus,” the firm’s message stated.
Inquiry Findings
National investigators disclosed that the jet’s port side wing burst into flames and an engine separated shortly after departure from the airfield, leading to the aircraft to fall and burst into a inferno.
The National Transportation Safety Board stated it is examining the aircraft’s service record, which was in Texas for fixes weeks prior to the incident.
Aircraft records revealed the jet was on the tarmac in the Texas city from early September to mid-October.
“We are cognizant that this jet was there in the facility,” stated an investigator on the following day, not giving a specific time frame. “We will look at every piece of repairs that was completed, even the San Antonio visit, straight to the time of the trip.”
Retrieval of Key Components
The cockpit voice recorder and data recorder were recovered, and the power plant was discovered on the airfield.
The units – called black boxes – were built to survive accident forces and intense temperatures from fires, and they appeared to be intact when discovered amid the remains. Authorities plan on reviewing data from the black boxes.
Aircraft’s final recorded information showed an height of 475 ft and a velocity of 210 mph ahead of the accident.
Service Record
Based on Federal Aviation Administration records from 18 September, a crack on a part within the fuel container needed maintenance.
Headquartered in Singapore ST Engineering, which stated it offers structural repairs for UPS’s MD-11 and operates a maintenance center in Texas, refused to comment, but stated it would cooperate fully when relevant authorities contacted it.
Operations Resume
At the same time, UPS Worldport services restarted last night with its express also known as nighttime procedure, spokesperson Jim Mayer said. The three runways at Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport were also reopened.
The UPS package handling facility in the city is the organization’s most significant. The center hires in excess of 20,000 people in the region, handles numerous trips daily and sorts in excess of 400,000 parcels each hour.
Local Reaction
A memorial was held on the night of that date by the local worker’s group, which supports workers at the aviation hub, the company’s biggest air cargo hub.
Worker representatives, which stands for UPS workers, started the vigil with a moment of silence at 5.14pm, the estimated moment of the incident previously.
“This incident was so unexpected, so unexpected,” the official addressed the group of attendees. “No one had a chance to say goodbye to each of those who we have mourned.”
